Scary

(this is an old picture)
This week the sun came out so we headed outside (even though it was only 35 degrees).  The kids were getting out bikes and toys to play with.  I was out there with a friend and her daughter too.  All the sudden I happen to notice that Jameson walked right up to the pond (just a landscaping pond about 90 gallons, or about 2 ft deep and 3 1/2 ft x 5 ft.  I think that's right?)  I couldn't get there fast enough and he walked right in!  SCARY!!!  I ran yelling his name, my friend was right by him and noticed at the same time as me.  We couldn't quite get a good hold on him at first because he was wet, slippery, and kicking and he was laying in sideways and not standing.  So he was in for a few seconds and his head went in and out a few times.  We are so blessed that we were there and noticed at the right time (he was very quiet).  The water was freezing and filthy (winter snow/rain melted and sitting there all winter).  I brought him in, got him in the bath, and just wanted to hold him forever.  He also has tubes in his ears so I was worried about the yucky water getting in, the nurse said he should be fine, plus I had a hat on him that covers the ears and I gave him ear drops too.

So yesterday Scott and the kids emptied and pulled out the pond (something we've talked about doing for a long time!)  It can look nice when it's all up and running, but DEFINITELY not worth the risk!  I wish I would have taken pictures while they removed it.  Now it looks so weird there.  They filled it in with dirt and covered rocks over.  When it warms up will do some different landscaping there.

I've "witnessed" a couple near drownings (not really, because each time we saw them go in, but if we hadn't....)--2x with my own kid, once at the pool, and once with a cousin's kid, and there is absolutely NO NOISE from the kid. Not when they go in and not while they are in and struggling.

Glad you were right there to pull him out. I can relate to that sickening feeling.

Good idea to ditch the pond.
